Alexey Makarin is an Assistant Professor of Applied Economics and a Mitsubishi Career Development Assistant Professor in International Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is currently visiting Harvard University, Department of Economics for the academic year 2025-26. Alexey’s research focuses on political economy, economics of media, and international trade. His work has been published in such journals as the American Economic Review, Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, and received attention from media outlets such as the New York Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, NPR, and Freakonomics. It has also been cited in the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on Social Media and Youth Mental Health and the Economic Report of the President (2024, 2025). Alexey earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Northwestern University.
