On Friday, October 7, 2022, Daron Acemoglu delivered the 2022 WIDER Annual Lecture at the Universidad de los Andes (UNIANDES), as the closing session of the 2022 WIDER Development Conference Reducing Inequality, co-organized by UNIANDES and United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research. The presentation, drawing on In the Name of Progress: Our Thousand-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity, explored how and why techno-optimism has taken root in economics, and how it has influenced current policies and regulations. The event also featured remarks and observations by Marcela Eslava (Professor of Economics, Universidad de los Andes).
